Regrettably, the demise of the Digest Magazine means we can no longer continue our sponsorship of Sangita Kumari, whom we have supported since February 2005. In total, the Digest Magazine contributed almost £400 to the welfare of Sangita and other young children in her community in Nepal so let's hope that our small contribution went some way to making conditions a bit easier for them. Those contributions, directly from the proceeds of the Digest Magazine, reaffirm once again the value of that publication and how it could have benefited many more people.
To those people still of the belief that the magazine was too expensive at £2.00 per month then I can assure you now that your monthly income would have been more than ours and yet we continued to donate £14 per month on behalf of all our readers to a little girl we will never know.
It is sad that a majority of people within the local community can see no further than themselves and while ever that is the case there is no hope for the community as a whole. The people who complain most about the state of the community are often those who do nothing about it and who contribute nothing to it and when an opportunity arises to spread a bit of joy and happiness they abandon it because it means they have to do something themselves. The Digest Magazine offered an opportunity for everyone to contribute to a publication not governed by any local organisation but by its readers themselves and if it didn't contain what you wanted that's only because you didn't contribute to it.
I will never understand the philosophy of a large group of previous readers who decided not to purchase the new magazine because they were from Pontefract and it also contained stories about Knottingley and vice versa. Let me get this right; you don't want to read something that is of interest to you because there is something else in there that might not be of interest to you? Ehmmm..yes, okay. As stated in a previous post, I wonder how on earth the Pontefract & Castleford Express would fare under those conditions?
One visitor to our market stall gleefully remarked that "you've blown it". No lady, it's you and those people of similar beliefs who have blown it. I can move on to other things but there will never be another Digest Magazine and that's a great loss to both Pontefract and Knottingley.
